Blabbering of a Fool

Code Blue Episode 01

At the Shouyou University Hokubu Hospital (翔陽大学附属北部病院), abbreviated as Shouhoku (翔北), 4 flight doctors-in-training arrive at the Emergency Unit for their internship. They are Aizawa Kousaku, Shiraishi Megumi, Hiyama Mihoko, and Fujikawa Kazuo. They are given an orientation of the hospital by Morimoto Tadashi, a flight doctor, who briefs them on the operations of the hospital, and also introduces the interns to the patients currently residing in the hospital. One such patient is Kuriyama Miki, a 15-year-old girl, who is suffering from kidney failure and an infection across her entire right arm. Halfway through the orientation, the hospital helicopter returns from a mission, and Morimoto and the 4 interns rush to the helipad.

Upon landing of the helicopter, the 4 excited interns rush to help as much possible with the patient, who is currently tended by flight doctor Kuroda Shuuji, who is also the mentor to these 4 interns, and flight nurse Saejima Haruka.
Reaching the operating room, and with the patient, Madam Takigawa, on the operating table, the interns watch on as the experienced staff rush to save their patient. The enthusiastic interns get to perform in the room as well, but only Aizawa, who skilfully fixes Fujiwara’s blunder, and Shiraishi impress Kuroda with their skills and knowledge. Hiyama is asked to contact Takigawa’s relatives, and Fujiwara, to request for an anaesthesiologist. The latter two are clearly unpleased with themselves and their first tasks. Before they leave, Kuroda teaches a lesson about how errors cannot be made in Doctor Heli (the name of the group of flight doctors in Shouhoku).

At the operation later, Aizawa and Shiraishi get to help out the doctors, Fujiwara only gets to watch, and Hiyama is still trying to get through to one of Takigawa’s relatives. Just when the operation is done, learning that Kuriyama refuses to go for her CT scan, Kuroda asks Aizawa to go ahead, but the nurses informs him that Kuriyama has asked for Fujikawa instead, which thrills him. Meanwhile, Hiyama is getting tired of her task, which so far has rendered no results.
Returning from her CT scan, a curious Fujikawa asks Kuriyama for the reason why she had requested for him specifically, and is disappointed to learn that the young girl is just too shy to ask Aizawa to check on her, to the amusement of both Saejima and Kuriyama.

Kuroda is asked to meet the Unit Chief, Tadokoro Yoshiaki, in his office, and is requested by the Chief to allow the interns more opportunities onboard the helicopter. Kuroda asks for the reason why he is put as mentor to the interns again this year, and Tadokoro bluntly put the reason to be Kuroda’s dislike towards young people.
During the CT scan of Takigawa, Aizawa and Shiraishi share a conversation, where it is revealed that Shiraishi is the daughter to a professor in another hospital. When the scan is over, a neurologist, Saijou Susumu, introduces himself to the interns. Shiraishi gets to display her vast medical knowledge again to Kuroda and Saijou, and from the result of the scan, the doctors are surprised to see nail lodged in the nasal cavity of Takigawa.

Lunchtime, the interns sit together and share their own happenings for the day so far. Fujikawa learns from Aizawa that Kuriyama had cut her own wrist too deep, plus she is suffering from diabetes, thus resulting in an infection. Kuroda then approaches them, asking who wishes to ride the helicopter for the day and handle the situations that may occur. All except Aizawa raise their hands, and eventually Shiraishi lowers hers due to lack of confidence.
During a treatment on an ICU patient, Shiraishi spaces out for a moment, and the reason is that she has been chosen to be on flight duty for the day, noted by a wireless radio carried by her. Hiyama meets 3 of Takigawa’s friends, who met because of a common interest in haiku, and is faced with an amusing situation. She returns to the nurse station and hears from a nurse that one of Takigawa’s sons called up to ask them not to contact him as it was a bother, to her disbelief. Having completed their rounds and duties, the interns gather at the nurse station when a call requesting for Doctor Heli sounds. Nervousness show from their eyes, especially from Shiraishi.

On her debut flight, Shiraishi commits a few procedure misses, and treated rather coldly by Saejima. Upon reaching the rendezvous point, the doctors learn that the patient, injured in an independent motorcycle accident, is bleeding from the side of his head, and Shiraishi is shocked at the sight of so much blood. Her faltering causes the patient to go into critical condition.
Meanwhile, Fujikawa is pouring his heart out to Kuriyama, who is undergoing dialysis, about how unfair life is. This however brings down the girl’s mood, and soon a depressing story is shared by Kuriyama on her life. Fujikawa finally learns of Kuriyama’s plight, despite her cheerful facade, but is left speechless. Just then, his phone rings, and he is informed that the helicopter is returning.

Fujikawa rushes to the helipad and finds his fellow interns and Morimoto already waiting there. He assumes that Shiraishi had done a great job, from the news Morimoto told them. No time is wasted as the patient is sent to the operating room and onto the table, with the doctors, including the interns, rushing treatment for him. Shiraishi fumbles on getting the ‘A’ line on the patient due to blood again, and is helped by Aizawa. Fujikawa gets scolded by Kuroda for trying to close wounds during treatment.
When the treatment is over, everyones leaves the room with the patient, except Shiraishi, who is clearly frustrated with her performance for this mission. Kuroda returns, telling her that she cannot fly anymore and demanding the wireless radio back. She hands him the radio, and is left sulking alone.

Later in the day, the interns are back to having their routine rounds, and troubles again. Hiyama is clearly baffled and disappointed about the situation Takigawa is in, looking at her intently from outside her ward room. Fujikawa learns from Morimoto that the infection in Kuriyama’s arm can no longer be controlled, and has to be amputated. He tries opposing to this decision, but Kuriyama has already given her consent for the operation.
In the night, Aizawa meets Kuroda in the hallway, and is asked if he does not wish to go onboard the helicopter, judging from his response back at the canteen earlier in the day. Aizawa replies that he wishes to be chosen for his abilities, and not by sympathy. Kuroda then relates to him Shiraishi’s performance on her virgin flight, which she was not able to do anything at all. He then throws the wireless radio to Aizawa, telling him that it is his turn the next day……
